In 1989, during a NIFDA (Now called Unipro) food buying
conference, 5 foodservice distributor principals were discussing the
opportunities of the fresh produce category. At that meeting were the 5
founding members of ProMark, Ron Dierks of Dierks Foods-Rockford, IL, Tom
Henning of Cash Wa Distributing-Kearney Nebraska, Chuck Hogg-HRS
Foodservice, Aberdeen, South Dakota, George Draper-Draper Foods, Fairmont
MN and Bill Hoy of Witchita Frozen Foods, Witchita, KS.
They recognized the fresh produce business
was becoming an increasingly competitive business. There was a challenge
to compete with the large national distributors who were making a stronger
impact in the foodservice distribution industry. They knew if they
combined their strengths, they could purchase, market and distribute their
fresh produce in an innovative and superior way. They could enjoy the
benefits of national distribution, yet maintain the benefits of
independent ownership. From this vision, a strategy was developed to
create a high quality, purchasing and marketing organization made up of
independent broadline distributors across the country.
ProMark Group is now made up of 20
independent broadline distributors with combined sales over 1.5 billion
dollars and 65 million dollars of produce purchasing power. ProMark
Group's exclusive brand, ProMark Label, is packed by the top grower
shippers in the U.S., meeting the stringent product specifications set by
the ProMark Group membership.
ProMark Group continues to strive to create
programs that bring value to its members. By providing value, we can
continue our goal to grow internally by increased sales and externally by
bringing on high quality independent distributors who fit our strategic
initiatives.
